The EPiC Mission

SUMMARY

THE EPiC MISSION: Our mission is not a matter of consensus, but commission. Some of the last words Jesus spoke lead the way for EPiC church. Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:18–20, NIV). Our mission is to live faithfully in Act 5 of the story by making known God’s rule and reign in our lives and making disciples by inviting others to the story of restoration (Matt 28:18-20).

THE EPiC VISION: When you move from mission to vision you move from the core purpose to the intentional portrait of success. That is mission tells you what we are about and vision tells you what it looks like for EPiC church to be faithful to that mission. EPiC church seeks to invite others to God’s story of restoration by planting a church in Torrance California and reaching the South Bay and greater Los Angeles area.

THE EPiC CONTEXT:
Torrance, California is the doorway to Los Angeles’ South Bay. It was founded to be a place where people can work live and play. This community is diverse and filled with working middle class families. In many ways this city has found success. People are drawn to Torrance because of its infrastructure and seek to make a life for themselves. However, through eyes of faith, something is missing. While, 53.1% of the residents have a religious affiliation, only 10% of people in Torrance are in Church on Sunday. That means the majority of the people in Torrance are either dechurched or unchurched. Disconnected from the story that brings life, many have sought to be the author and actor in their own story. The results have lead to a general epidemic of anxiety, high divorce rate, and filling life with things to help them cope.

THE EPiC STRATEGY: We believe EPiC is the way we will bridge the gap between mission and vision and the way we can respond to our context. An EPiC is a long narrative in which a hero performs legendary deeds. The scope of such a work is expansive and serves as the basis of a nation or a people. Just as the Exodus became the epic that shaped Israel, EPiC church will seek to bring meaning and life to the people of Torrance by introducing people to God’s story of restoration. How will we do that? Glad you asked! You see, EPiC is not just a descriptive name, it is the way others enter God’s story and take the journey of faith.
